Climb five volcanoes in five days! Join us for this Nicaragua volcano hiking challenge! Over the course of the trip, attempt the summits of five active volcanoes that are part of Nicaragua's Maribios volcanic chain. These include the beautiful, cone-shaped San Cristóbal and Momotombo Volcanoes as well as the feisty Cerro Negro volcano, one of Central America's youngest and most active. This trip is designed to provide fit and experienced mountain hikers a chance to test their mettle amidst the beauty of what may be the most striking volcanic landscape in Central America. November is the perfect time of year to experience Nicaragua, an "up-and-coming" Central American destination. Enjoy overnight accommodations in a restored convent in the historic Spanish colonial city of Leon in addition to one night of camping under the stars on the slopes of Momotombo volcano. Are you ready for the challenge?

November 14, 2009

November 15, 2009
Overnight in León
Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

Travel by vehicle to the slopes of the Cerro Negro volcano which sprang into existence in April of 1850 making it one of Central America's youngest volcanoes. Devoid of vegetation, the black, cinder cone of the volcano rises about 1,500 feet above its surroundings topping out at 2,382 feet above sea level. From the crater rim, gaze into the steaming crater and enjoy the views of the neighboring volcanoes notably Telica and San Cristobal. Descend the cinder slopes of Cerro Negro and continue hiking to reach El Hoyo volcano with a distinctive circular crater set in its southern flank. The nearby crater lake of El Tigre (also known as the Laguna de Asososca) presents an opportunity for a cooling swim toward the end of the day's hiking. Return to the hotel in León for the evening.

November 16, 2009
Overnight in León
Breakfast, lunch & dinner included
Travel by vehicle to the north flank of the active Telica Volcano whose bare ash and cinder slopes rise to a high point of 3,480 feet above sea level. Telica's cone is truncated by a large 2,200-foot-wide double crater whose southern vent has been the source of the volcano's recent eruptions. Traverse the slopes of Telica before descending into the highlands near the vegetated cone of the old Santa Clara Volcano. Finish the hike at the fumaroles and boiling mudpots of the San Jacinto thermal area. Return once again to León for the evening.

November 17, 2009
Overnight in León
Breakfast, lunch & dinner included
After breakfast, travel by 4x4 to the north slope of San Cristóbal, Nicaragua's tallest volcano (5,725 feet). San Cristóbal is one of a cluster of five volcanic peaks known collectively as El Chonco. Begin the long and steady ascent of this beautiful cone-shaped peak which is sometimes called, El Viejo ("the old one"). San Cristóbal's summit is crowned by an enormous crater about 1,600 feet across, and the views from the rim take in the Pacific Ocean to the west and a chain of volcanic peaks marching off to the southeast anchored in the distance by Momotombo volcano on the shores of Lake Managua. Return to León for the evening.

November 18, 2009
Overnight in camp on Momotombo Volcano
Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

Travel to the slopes of the Momotombo Volcano and begin the ascent of the volcano's symmetrical cone. Spend the evening in a camp in the forest just below the volcano's timberline (all supplies will be carried up by porters). Enjoy a Nicaraguan sunset and a quiet night under the stars.

November 19, 2009
Overnight in León
Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

This morning, make the final push to the rosy-colored ash and cinder summit of Momotombo Volcano from where you'll enjoy sweeping vistas over neighboring volcanoes and out to the Pacific Ocean. Below you, the waters of Lake Managua sparkle and in the distance you should be able to make out larger Lake Nicaragua and perhaps the cone of Volcan Concepcion rising from its waters. Descend Momotombo's slopes and return to León where we'll celebrate the conclusion of this Nicaraguan volcano challenge! Transfer back to Managua on the morning of November 20 is included in the trip price.
